The workshop by NZ artist Robert Jahnke will introduce students to kowhaiwhai through active drawing of the patterns that constitute the design language of kowhahwai.

At the end of the workshop students will be able to draw and understand the significance of the kowhaiwhai pattern component:

Koru (pitau); kape (ngatu kaka); koiri, mangopare, rauru and rarangi manawa.

Students will also be able to draw and understand the systems of symmetry that are used in kowhaiwhai design: bi-lateral symmetry, slide repetition, asymmetry, slide reflection, bi-fold rotation and correspondence symmetry.

Students will become familiar with some of the regional patterns associated with Tuhoe, Te Arawa, Ngati Porou and Rongowhakaata.

Students will be able to compose kowhaiwhai designs based on the Rongowhakaata approach to kowhaiwhai using the taratahi method.

The programme will finish with a power point presentation so that students can become familiar with some of the main kowhaiwhai artists in the modern era.
