Damien Kurth
Damien Kurth is a painter who currently lives outside Tauranga. He holds a BFA from Otago Polytechnic and an MFA from Elam. His own practice explores a way of depicting everyday objects so that they are transformed into something very different.
In Damien’s practical workshop you’ll be working on small paintings using the fundamental techniques of painting construction. These include composition, colour theory with an emphasis on markmaking. Casual discussion will be encouraged around the why, what and when of realistic painting approaches in the here and now.
We’ll be workshopping several ideas including discussing whether realist representational painting can be more than a repetition of image making ideas that have come before? Also exploring Damien’s own approaches to creating and problem solving within the painting process. This will include the application of traditional painting techniques to more abstract concepts and how this creates new areas to explore.
Please note that materials will be provided but you are also welcome to bring your favourite brush/es along.
