Nicky Deeley
Welcome home, Nicky! Since graduating from WINTEC School of Media Arts in 1999, Nicky has embarked on an impressive career in the UK. Her work is exhibited in the influential London Seventeen gallery where it has met with critical acclaim.
In her highly detailed sculptures, she explores human relationships with the innate and startling beauty and brutality of the natural world mixed with elements of gentle humour and pathos. Never far from the macabre and the simply repulsive, her latest sculpture entitled The Mallet of God shows a huge rat impaled on a pile of domestic rubbish.
In New Zealand she is well known for her album covers for the Datsuns which display an eclectic mix of Art Deco, Aubrey Beardsley and Psychedelia.
At SPARK Nicky will talk about her personal experience as an emerging artist. We will also see an exhibition of her sculptural work The Talisman Guardians, where she explores ceremonies as well as the spiritual and physical transformation involved in ritual violence.
